Raleigh, Durham & Chapel Hill: 9 Spring Festivals Worth Marking on Your Calendar

Raleigh Durham Chapel Hill
Spring has arrived in North Carolina, and our locals are ready to celebrate family, community, and fun at some of the most popular festivals the Triangle has to offer.

When we asked Our REALTORS® about their favorite spring events, the list was pretty long. Whether you're into food, music, science, or culture, something is going on that's sure to appeal to you. Check out these nine festivals, and you'll get a taste of what makes the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area a great place to live.

  1. Dreamville Festival: Raleigh, April 6
The multi-stage musical event Dreamville Festival is coming back to Raleigh on April 6th. This celebration of art, food, and local culture feature both well-known and up-and-coming musical artists curated by J. Cole. It's held in the 308-acre Dorothea Dix Park and promises to be one of this year's most popular events.

  2. Got to Be NC Fest: Raleigh, May 17 - 19
Gather up your family and friends and plan to spend some time at the 3-day Got to Be NC festival. This event offers carnival rides and games, pony rides, a selection of food from local vendors, shopping, and the ever-popular Masonic Carolina Pig Jig. The festival is held at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds and entrance on May 17 - 19.

  3. Raleigh International Food Festival, June 8
If there was ever a good excuse to take a break from looking at Raleigh homes for sale, the Raleigh International Food Festival is it. This event, held at City Plaza on Saturday, June 8, draws over 17,000 people and celebrates cultural diversity with international food, beer, and wine from around the world, and a variety of musical and dance performances.

  4. Durham Earth Day Festival, April 28
Celebrate taking care of Mother Earth at the free Durham Earth Day Festival on April 28th. You'll enjoy shopping at the Earth Day market, challenging yourself on the rock climbing wall, and taking the little ones to the Family Fun Zone. You also won't want to miss the Earth Day Parade. On your way home, we suggest taking the scenic route so you can get a look at some of the great Durham homes for sale.

  5. Moogfest: Durham, April 25 - 28

Parks & Outdoor Spaces in the Triangle

Parks & Outdoor Spaces in the Triangle
March 30 is National Take a Walk in the Park Day. After a long winter, it's a holiday that our real estate agents can get behind. We've got a lot of great outdoor spaces here in the Triangle area, and these are some of our favorite places to take a walk in the park in Raleigh, Durham and beyond.

  1. Green Hills County Park - 9300 Deponie Drive, Raleigh
This beautiful park in Northeast Raleigh is an excellent place for family fun, with an elementary school, middle school, and numerous Raleigh homes for sale nearby. With ample wide open spaces, Green Hills County Park offers picnic pavilions, playgrounds, walking trails and a challenging mountain bike skills course. The park's vast open fields are great for flying kites, playing Frisbee or stretching out on a picnic blanket.
  2. Apex Community Park - 2200 Laura Duncan Road, Apex
Spanning 160 beautiful acres, Apex Community Park is just a few miles southwest of Raleigh and includes more than 3 miles of secluded nature and running trails. The park is just footsteps away from many Apex homes for sale, and also includes 50-acre lake that is great for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. A wide range of sports facilities are located at the park as well, including basketball and tennis courts, soccer fields, sand volleyball courts, baseball fields, and batting cages.
  3. Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve - 2616 Kildaire Farm Road, Cary
The rugged Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve is one of the great places in the Triangle to get away from it all. Despite being just minutes away from these Cary homes for sale, the preserve feels wild and remote, with hiking trails that meander along ridges, ravines, creeks, and stands of mature hemlock trees. Be sure to stop in at the Stevens Nature Center while you're there to learn more about the preserve.
  4. Durham Central Park - 501 Foster Street, Durham
True to its name, Durham Central Park is at the beating heart of Durham, offering not only a great place to go for a walk, toss a Frisbee or have a picnic, but also hosting some of the cities biggest events. If you're visiting to check out Durham homes for sale, you might want to plan your trip to coincide with the Durham Central Park Food Truck Rodeo or the Pints for Paws Craft Beverage Festival. The park also hosts the weekly Durham Farmers' Market every Saturday year-round.
  5. Prairie Ridge Ecostation - 1671 Gold Star Drive, Raleigh
Part of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, the Prairie Ridge Ecostation encompasses nearly 40 acres of reclaimed land – mostly former cow pastures – that has been allowed to return to its natural state. Today it's an incredible place for hiking, bird watching and nature photography, with prairie grasslands, bottomland forests, ponds and streams that harbor a rich diversity of plant and animal life.
  6. White Deer Park and Nature Center - 2400 Aversboro Road, Garner
Nestled on the picturesque shores of Lake Benson, White Deer Park and Nature Center is a perfect place to enjoy some time in the great outdoors, and to introduce the next generation to the joys of exploring the natural world. With numerous Garner homes for sale in the area, the park is easily accessible, offering everything from nature trails and picnic facilities to nature exhibits and environmental gardens.

Urban Farms and Community Gardens in Raleigh

Raleigh Urban Farms
As you spend time in the area searching for Raleigh homes for sale, you'll want to get a sense of the values that those in this community share. This city is positively blossoming with urban agriculture, and there is no better example of the townspeople's dedication to permaculture and the great outdoors than The Well Fed Community Garden. Our real estate agents would be thrilled to show you how this garden uses a farm-to-fork approach to feed the people of Raleigh.

Enriching Raleigh From Farm to Fork

The City of Raleigh understands how much of a positive social, economic and environmental impact the presence of agriculture has in an urban setting. The Well Fed Community Garden is one of the many efforts that they support throughout the year. This plot of land is home to an acre and a half of vegetables, fruits, herbs, fungi, and other plants, as well as honey bees and chickens.

The Well Fed Community Garden was purchased in 2012 by the owners of the Irregardless Café. Since the 1970s, Irregardless has been cooking up food for the residents of Raleigh that is locally sourced through sustainability initiatives. Though meat, fish and poultry meals are available, their menu is crafted for vegan and vegetarian enjoyment as well.

Their rooftop solar thermal panels use renewable energy to heat their water supply, and the Well Fed Community Garden provides the local ingredients that have made Irregardless Café's delicious options a popular choice for any taste. Although most of the harvest from the Garden is served to customers at Irregardless, 20 percent of that which is grown is donated to the volunteers and neighbors that help this community thrive.

Lovin' Spadefuls

If you purchase one of the Raleigh homes for sale near Athens Drive, you'll soon discover that the Well Fed Community Garden is always buzzing with activity. Home to an annual blackberry festival, the Garden also hosts frequent garden workshops, cooking classes, yoga sessions, and art lessons. You can even help enrich the city and your own life by volunteering throughout the year.

To dig into the heart of The Well Fed Community Garden, our real estate agents encourage you to sign up for the Lovin' Spadefuls experience. Small groups of two to six can enjoy an intimate two-hour tour through the Garden in which you'll explore the grounds and learn all about the bounty that this amazing acre provides. You can also choose to include a lunch at the Irregardless Café after your experience to get a true taste of the community's efforts.

To learn more about the community gardens and urban agriculture near Raleigh homes for sale, contact us. If you'd like to buy or sell a home in the area, one of our real estate agents would be happy to help you!
