Tips for Hosting a New Year's Eve Party

The year is drawing to a close, and a new year is on the horizon. This is certainly an occasion to celebrate! New Year's Eve is the perfect opportunity to party with family, friends or a mix of both. • Ask Everyone to Bring a Dish or Snack
  Things can get busy in the weeks leading up to New Year's Eve. Lighten your load by asking your guests to bring a dish or snack to share. Be specific, so you end up with a good assortment of treats. For instance, you could ask one guest to bring a salty snack and another to bring something sweet. 
  
  
• Prepare a Countdown Clock
  A big part of the fun at a New Year's party is counting down the minutes until the clock strikes 12! Try doing this with your own countdown clock. Buy a big dry-erase board, and hang it on one wall. Draw a large, circular clock on the board. As the night goes on, erase and re-draw the hands to represent the current time. Consider also putting a big "gong" next to the clock. You can strike it each time you change the clock, calling your guests' attention to the activity. 
  
  
• Set up a Hot Chocolate Bar
  A hot chocolate bar is a fun, festive treat that guests of all ages can enjoy. Along with the hot chocolate, you can prepare a buffet of fun toppings. Good options include whipped cream, crushed Oreo cookies, and colorful sprinkles. Cinnamon candies and crushed peppermint candies work well, too. If you want to give a party favor, New Year's Eve-themed coffee cups are a great choice. People can use them at the hot chocolate bar and then take them home.
  
  
• Implement a Dress Code
  Dressing up will make your New Year's Eve party feel more special. Set a dress code, and include mention of it on your invitations. You can be as vague or as specific as you like. The words "dress to impress!" are a kind way of letting guests know they should dress up without being overly directive. Feel free to take things a step further with a theme if desired. • Set up the TV
  You don't want to be scrambling to figure out how to watch the ball drop at 11 pm. Figure out, well before the party, what channel the ball drop is on or how you can stream it. Set up the TV, so you only have to push a few buttons on party night.
  
  
• Stock up on Sparklers
  In some families and traditions, it is typical to open poppers as the clock strikes 12. In other traditions, lighting off sparklers is typical. In either case, make sure you stock up on sparklers or poppers, so everyone has their noise-making, flashy item of choice to ring in the new year. If you choose sparklers, do make sure your guests know to go outside and light them.
