Get to Know the Fuquay-Varina Arts Center

Fuquay-Varina Arts Center

The Fuquay-Varina Arts Center is a recent addition to the area near our homes for sale in Fuquay-Varina, but it's already made a big splash in the community. From its many art classes to its theater packed full of spectators every week, this organization always has something new in store. Keep reading to learn more about why our real estate agents love it so much.

About the Center

The Fuquay-Varina Arts Center opened on March 18th, 2019, after a long stretch of renovation and expansion. The main part of the building started out as a Belk's department store before being retrofitted into a space for the arts. This part of the center currently houses an art gallery, several painting and dance studios, and four classrooms.

The building also received an expansion before the center's official opening, adding a professional-grade theater that can seat almost 300 people. This space is equipped with a full technical booth to help bring even the most elaborate productions to life, allowing the center to generate extra revenue from ticket sales to fund its other activities.

Arts Classes for All

They offer a full catalog of dance classes in a wide range of styles, including jazz, ballet, and tap. If dance isn't your thing, they also offer classes on subjects like comedy, improv, portrait sketching, and even crochet. Each class is taught by a seasoned instructor with a clear passion for the subjects they're teaching.

Most of the center's classes are geared toward children, but there are plenty for adults as well. You'll need to register in advance and pay a course fee to cover the cost of any materials you use. Note that the class line-up changes over the year depending on instructor availability, so be sure to check their online course calendar frequently if you're hoping to see a specific subject covered.

Shows and Exhibits

In addition to their classes, the Fuquay-Varina Arts Center also hosts many artistic works and performances in their gallery and theater. The Massengill Design Build Gallery is always full of paintings, sketches, sculptures, and other works by various artists in the community. New exhibits arrive every month or two to give more artists a chance to have their work showcased.

In the theater, shows are performed every week for a community audience. A few upcoming highlights include:

  • Joshua Lozoff's Life is Magic on February 25th at 7:30 PM. This old-fashioned magic show blends classic sleight of hand with psychological tricks to create an entertaining show that is sure to delight people of all ages.
  • Beatlesesque on March 11th at 7:30 PM. Take a trip back to the '60s with an evening full of tunes from Fuquay-Varina's favorite Beatles tribute band, back by popular demand.
  • And many more!

The Fuquay-Varina Arts Center may be new, but it's sure to become a cultural touchstone for the community for generations to come. Contact us today to learn more about the Fuquay-Varina area and local real estate opportunities.

Tickets will be sold at the gate for $13 per adult and $7 per child. There are discounts available for senior citizens and military members. Children ages 5 and younger enjoy free admission.

  • Key Events and Entertainment
The N.C. State Fair is known for its unique performances and entertainment. One such event is the Folk Festival, which takes place at Heritage Circle inside the fairgrounds. Each day, folk dancers and musicians will compete for prizes. You'll hear bluegrass, square dancing music, and modern folk.

Another fun attraction is the Antique Farm Machinery exhibit. Featuring a range of old-fashioned tools and machines, this display will teach you a lot about how farmers used to work.

Of course, you can't miss the Flower & Garden Show. Here, you can walk along winding pathways, admiring stunning plants grown by local gardeners. See flowers, herbs, and even potted trees.

  • Food and Drinks
Would it even be a fair without fair food? Walk through the fair, and you'll find it hard to resist options like deep-fried Oreos, gator kabobs, and fruit smoothies. Of course, you'll also see plenty of the classics: roasted corn, turkey legs, funnel cakes, and snow cones.

Don't forget to buy some salt water taffy or fudge to take home for later. There are several candy booths to visit.

  • Grandstand Shows

Historic Theaters in the Triangle

Historic Venues

When you look at Raleigh homes for sale, you know you're considering an area known for its strong economy and outstanding research output. But the Triangle is also steeped in history, with a range of cultural institutions that have been in the area for decades. Theater and the arts are crucial to its unique flavor.

Our real estate agents are always glad to help homebuyers discover all the Triangle has to offer. When it comes to the performing arts, Raleigh is surrounded by historic venues. You can have a truly memorable night out with concerts, the symphony, ballet, and dramatic productions of all kinds.

The Triangle is rapidly becoming one of the most sought-after areas on the East Coast, and its vibrant relationship with the arts is another reason why. Today, we'll take a closer look at some of the historic theaters that help provide wonder and excitement to life in the Raleigh area.

Raleigh Little Theatre

Located at 301 Pogue Street, Raleigh, NC 27607, Raleigh Little Theatre is in many ways the centerpiece of the dramatic arts here in the RVA. Lovingly known as the "RLT," it was first opened to the public back in 1936 and is now one of the country's oldest continuously operating community theaters.

The grounds of the Raleigh Little Theatre consist of the Stephenson Amphitheatre and the Raleigh Rose Garden. Contemporary, family-friendly movies are screened under the stars in the Garden. By contrast, the community dramatic productions are usually held in the 298-seat main theater or the Amphitheatre.

There is always something new to see in the Raleigh Little Theatre. Thanks to the 150-seat Teaching Theatre added in 1990, even those with no experience can begin to enjoy participating. Every year, thousands of visitors from all over North Carolina and the world attend RLT performances.

The 2022-2023 season of Raleigh Little Theatre promises to be a splendid one, with each member of the RLT community working hard to restore the theater experience after two years of safety precautions. Pride and Prejudice, Blood Wedding, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee will be shown.

The Carolina Theatre of Durham

The Carolina Theatre of Durham stands at 309 West Morgan Street, Durham, NC 27701. As the biggest of theaters near Durham homes for sale, it has a special place in the local arts scene. Opening for the first time in 1926, it is even a little bit older than its sister theater in Raleigh.

The Carolina Theatre hosts a full spectrum of events, and the stage is always busy, even when there are no dramatic productions on the docket.

Classic films are also aired, running the gamut from the 1944 romance Frenchman's Creek to 1985's Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. Sundance Short Films and acclaimed documentaries also feature prominently in the schedule. The Carolina Theatre is known for plenty of kid-friendly programming and great variety.

Last, but not least, you might want to enjoy the educational programming. Family Saturday promises fun bonding for all, while the Art Discovery Educational Series helps young audiences to encounter the magic of the theater and the transformative power of artistic expression.

This is only the beginning of what you can discover in the Triangle. There are countless other theaters, museums, and much more. The story of Raleigh is continuing to unfold, and you can be a part of it.

We are here to help. Contact us to find out more about Raleigh and the Triangle.

In and around the Triangle area, there are several beautiful luxury listings available for sale. What exactly differentiates these properties from the standard market? Is it the square footage, the features, or the technology? Some would say it is all of the above. Ultimately, luxury buyers are not looking at the price tag in their search for their next dream home but the amazing amenities that come with the property. Here are the top 6 must-have features in luxury homes!

1. Indoor / Outdoor living

Indoor/outdoor living seamlessly extends your home's great room or dining quarters. This trend tends to keep cohesion in design from the interior to the exterior of your home. Typically indoor/ outdoor living has always been a primal commodity when searching for a new home. With the new normal consisting of being at your humble abode more these days, the amenity has become a necessity. What makes an outdoor living space luxurious is the ability to provide comfort through all seasons while also allotting multiple entertainment options. High-end features include retracting screened porches, outdoor kitchens, cabanas, and sometimes a type of water feature. This CBHPW luxury listing checks off each box on the list! 2. Theatre Room

Entertainment becomes the next level when a luxury property contains an in-home theater. The ability to bring the ultimate cinematic experience to your fingertips is a sought amenity many buyers search for when hunting for their next home. What makes an in-home theater top-notch is its ability to incorporate features similar to an actual movie theater. This includes a top-of-the-line av-system, projector, large screens, recessed lighting, and comfortable loungers. The goal of the theater room is to immerse yourself in what's on the screen, whether that be the newest megahit movie or the exciting rival sports game. The cinema room pictured above is from none other than one of our CBHPW luxury listings. 3. Large Garages

The standard two-car garage does not cut it for luxury properties. Buyers are looking for substantial space when envisioning the housing of their precious automobiles. Typically, luxury properties have at least a 3-car garage! To any car buff, the garage is not just a space for storing your vehicle. This part of the property could be turned into a luxurious showroom, man cave, or workshop. This beautiful CBHPW luxury property comes with a three-car garage with gorgeous rustic wood garage doors. To view more of this property, click here.

4. Intricate Ceiling Designs

Raised ceilings and other intricate ceiling styles are quite the fanbase for luxury homes. A room turns from basic to compelling when there is a ceiling feature that adds depth, sophistication, and style. In most luxury dwellings, at least one space must contain a styled ceiling. One of these rooms can be the living room, sitting room, primary bedrooms, and or dining rooms. What exactly are some styles of these ceilings? They are cathedral, tray, beamed, suspended, and coffered. One would love to have any of these exquisite designs in their home!  For example, in this CBHPW luxury listing above. The sitting room contains a beautiful coffered ceiling. The coffered ceiling consists of sunken panels accented by molding, creating a waffle-like appearance. What works well in this room is the brilliant addition of recessed lighting. For more on this property click here

5. Massive Walk-In Closets

Typically an owner of a luxury home tends to live a complete life of luxury. Meaning everything about them is high-end, like their fashion sense. Closets in a luxury home are an extension of the main room and need to boast space and means of organization. Closets these days are not just for hanging clothes. They can be an area to lounge in after using the spa bathroom or a place to put on that fashion show after shopping in the streets of London. For sure, luxury home buyers are looking for closets that encompass organization and can show off their beautiful wardrobe. In this CBHPW luxury home, the primary closet is genuinely massive. This closet incorporates different levels of custom built-in shelving and an island dresser to accommodate all buyers' attire needs. To view more of this property, click here.

6. Relaxing Spa baths

When buyers search for their next home, kitchens and bathrooms are the most focused rooms, which is why main bathrooms in luxury homes are genuinely upping the ante in their need to give that spa-like aura. Features include a jacuzzi bathtub fit for a king, a large walk-in shower that doubles as a steam room, neutral colors, beautiful stone or tile, and lots of space for minimal clutter. In this CBHPW luxury listing, this bathroom truly exuberates comfort and relaxation. The large window allows natural light to encase the room, making the white pop against the darker grays. The unity in neutral colors creates a calming sensation. One can relax in the free-standing tub or use the shower with multi-shower heads in this bathroom. To view more, click here

CAM Raleigh is the foremost art and design museum in the area and prides itself on an ever-changing experience that truly defies description. Weekly tours start at 2 p.m. every Sunday. About First Friday Raleigh

First Friday Raleigh

Each month, our real estate agents join others heading to downtown Raleigh for First Friday. This beloved event involves galleries, shops, and restaurants celebrating the rich arts culture surrounding Raleigh homes for sale. Plus, each month offers something new with rotating exhibits and talks with local artists. Check out these vibrant downtown spots that can be seen on First Friday or any day of the year.

  • City Market Farmer's Market - 225 E. Davie St., Raleigh, NC 27601
With numerous farms dotting the rural landscape, agriculture is one of North Carolina's defining industries. City Market Farmer's Market pays homage with a mural spotlighting the various fruits and vegetables grown around the state. There's also a vignette showing a farmer heading to market with his horse-drawn wagon. Have fun searching for the faces that are hidden within the various fruits and vegetables.

  • Pas de Chat - Duke Energy Center, 2 E. South St., Raleigh, NC 27601
Can we quantify the source of art? Pas de Chat, a 25-foot sculpture that towers outside the Duke Energy Center, represents the unseen essence behind the creation of dance, music, theater, and visual arts. Its name refers to a ballet step, which literally translates to "cat's step," that mimics the movement of a jumping cat. The sculpture is designed to make it appear as though it's sitting in a pool of light.

  • Downtown Adventures - 510 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC 27603
In 2020, the Downtown Raleigh Alliance asked four local artists to create interactive murals promoting First Friday. One of these murals, Downtown Adventures, incorporates distinctive pop art features such as vivid colors and linear geometric shapes to depict iconic buildings in the Glenwood South district. Artist Sarahlaine Calva is self-taught, using acrylics and spray paint to create her eye-catching designs. As with the other three murals, Downtown Adventures includes a QR code that viewers can use to learn more about First Friday.

  • 8-bit to 5G - 429 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh, NC 27601
Technology meets art in 8-bit to 5G, making Raleigh the first location in North America to host a permanent installation honoring the culture of gaming. The mural, which highlights the course of gaming history, was designed to incorporate an Augmented Reality (AR) feature that will ultimately bring the pieces of the artwork to life.

  • The Acorn - Duke Energy Center, 2 E. South St., Raleigh, NC 27601
NYC has its Big Apple, Atlanta has its Peach, and downtown Raleigh has its Acorn. Local public relations agent John Watkins felt that Raleigh needed an iconic symbol for its 1992 bicentennial and commissioned artist David Benson to create the acorn sculpture. Like the Waterford crystal ball in Times Square, the 10-foot, 1,250-pound copper and steel Acorn is "dropped" to signify the arrival of the new year on First Night Raleigh.

Art plays an important role in Raleigh every day, but during First Fridays, it takes center stage. Immerse yourself in the creative spirit that lives throughout Raleigh. Contact us at Howard Perry and Walston to speak with one of our cheerful and experienced real estate agents.

About the Joel Lane Museum House Raleigh's Oldest House

Joel Lane HouseWhether you're a newcomer to the Raleigh area or have lived in Wake County for a long time, a visit to the Joel Lane Museum House lets you take a step back in time. You'll learn about local, state, and national history as you get a glimpse into life in the late 1700s.

Our real estate agents share what you can expect when visiting Raleigh's oldest house.

About Raleigh's Oldest Home

The Joel Lane Museum House was built in 1769, making it the oldest home in Raleigh and even older than our country. Built by Colonel Joel Lane – who is known as both the Father of Wake County and Raleigh – the house is now a museum that's a Raleigh Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1771, he introduced legislation to found Wake County, and the Colonial Assembly approved it. Lane's home was the site where the decision was made in 1792 to buy a 1,000-acre parcel of his land for the state's new capital city of Raleigh.

Learn About Colonial Life

The museum lets you hear the stories of the people who lived during the colonial era, the Revolutionary War, and the early years of a new nation. Costumed guides tell accurate stories and create a personalized tour for each group of guests.

The house itself has been restored to its appearance in the 1793-94 era. You'll also see a building called the Kitchen, which was moved from northern Wake County in 1979. It was a middle-class house built around 1790 but is similar in design to a colonial kitchen. In addition, the visitors center – which houses the gift shop and offices – is also on the property. It was built around 1840 as an addition to the Lane home but was removed from the original home when it was restored.

What to Know Before You Go

Tours resumed for the Joel Lane Museum House in June, giving North Carolina residents a chance to learn about the Revolutionary War and the early days of the Raleigh area.

The Joel Lane Museum House is located at the corner of South St. Mary's and West Hargett Streets in Raleigh. To take a tour, go to the visitors' center at 160 South St. Mary's Street. Parking is free and can be found on St. Mary's Street in front of the visitors' center and on Hargett Street in front of the museum house.

Be sure to check their website or call before your visit for the latest on their COVID-19 guidelines.

Admission to the museum is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors age 65 and over, $4 for students kindergarten through college with ID, and free for children under 6 as well as Blue Star Families.

St. Patrick's Day Crafts Your Kids Will Love

Raleigh Crafts

Our real estate agents love spreading the Luck O' the Irish! This year, consider taking a short break from exploring the beautiful Raleigh homes for sale so you and your little ones can enjoy a fun St. Paddy's Day-themed craft party! Here are a few easy ideas to help you plan your day.

  1. Leprechaun Paper Plate
It's easy to make an adorable leprechaun using a paper plate, a little bit of paint, and some construction paper. Begin by turning a plain white paper plate upside down and painting the outside edge with orange paint. While you're waiting for the paint to dry, use green, yellow, and black construction paper to make a hat and glue it to the top of the plate. Draw a face with a black Sharpie marker, and you've got an adorable leprechaun to help you celebrate St. Patrick's Day!
  1. 3-D Shamrock
Want to make a shamrock that pops? Try this fun 3-D paper shamrock. Start by cutting green construction paper into six hearts that are the same size and a piece in the shape of a shamrock stem. Fold each heart in half vertically, making a strong crease. Glue the stem at the bottom of the page and the bottom four hearts over the stem, directly across from each other. Now use the last two hearts to make the top of the shamrock, and you're done! This is a great way to make a 3-D card that your child can give to a loved one.
  1. Leprechaun Handprint Craft
Handprint crafts create a memorable keepsake you can treasure for years. To make this fun handprint leprechaun, start by painting your child's fingers orange and the palm a skin color. Then, have them press their hand hard on a piece of white paper. For this craft, the fingers will point down, as they will make the beard. Use paint, markers, or construction paper to make a tophat and add some orange paint underneath to look like hair. Finally, add some googly eyes and draw a nose and mouth -- and you've got a happy leprechaun to celebrate the day with you.
  1. Rainbow Chain Necklace
Kids love crafts they can wear, so this rainbow chain necklace is always a big hit! It's easy to make and will keep them busy for a while. All you need is colored construction paper, tape or a stapler, and some gold glitter. Start by cutting red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple paper into small strips. Then, show your child how to make each piece into a circle, interlocking them together. Hold each piece together with a staple or a dot of glue. Finally, make a pot of gold with construction paper and your gold glitter. Staple or glue it to the front of the wreath, and it's ready to go.
  1. Fabric Wreath
If you have an older child or you're willing to help, this DIY fabric wreath is another fun project. Start with a 12-inch wire wreath frame and 1 yard each of lime green, polka dot, and shamrock-patterned fabric. Cut the fabric into 1.5 x 7-inch strips. Then tie each piece of fabric to the frame, one at a time, creating a pattern. Start from the outside edge and work your way in. When you're done, hang it on your door with a piece of green ribbon.

You don't need luck to find a great home in the Raleigh area. The home of your dreams is out there waiting for you, so don't delay! Contact us today to get started.
